County Kildare's Pat Eddery began his career as a flat racing jockey in 1967 and rode the winners of 4,632 British flat races, a figure only exceeded by Sir Gordon Richards. He rode 3 winners if the Epsom Derby and was Champion Jockey on 11 occasions, a record he shares with Lester Piggott.
